This unconventional exhibition showcases the work of nationally renowned artist China Blue and her team Seth Horowitz and Christopher Konopka. Together they craft an almost transcendent experience through sight and sound, leaving gallery visitors viscerally connected to the inner workings of their minds. “Creativity of Consciousness” allows visitors to simultaneously explore both neuroscience concepts and human creativity.” states artist China Blue. Through traditional 2-D paintings and 3-D immersive art installations, participants are provided access to explore how external reality can be formed and manipulated via their internal mental states. “Creativity of Consciousness” features three distinct sections: two interactive artworks and a series of paintings. “Imagining Blue” is an interactive brainwave sculpture that responds to a participant’s mind by dynamically changing in light, motion and sound. With this sculpture, users are able to watch their brain in action. By accessing mental states of relaxation, meditation, focus or excitation MindDraw enables participants to drive the shape and speed of projected imagery. The resulting illustration changes in real time reflecting the state of the participant's brain. “Memory Network” is a series of paintings that reflect how we may connect and hold on to our life experiences. Inspired by the brain scans of Alzheimer’s patients, China Blue uses these images as maps, filling the empty spaces with aluminum-based paint. These connected, shiny globules make stunning displays of the delicate, fragile impermanence of our experiences and memories. Through the creative practice, brainwaves can be interpreted and experienced in real-time, as aestheticized color and form. As the enigma of the mind begins to fall away, visitors discover a playground of wonder and awe as their own body is illuminated. Ahmed is best known for utilizing the traditional decorative craft of carpet-making to create contemporary sculptural works of art. He explores fresh new visual forms that challenge our perception of traditions through iconic cultural objects. Oriental rugs are often covered in symbols, narrating the stories of their particular cultures through form and pattern. In Ahmed’s creative practice he deftly navigates the traditions and rituals of these cultures. “Patterns and ornaments can be found in all cultures, sometimes similar, sometimes very different. I consider them words and phrases that can be read and translated to a language we understand.” says Ahmed. By expanding the notion of what these traditionally crafted works of art look like, Faig suggests new ideas about the nature of reality and the limits of human perception. Through his work the observer understands the tension between the stability of traditional carpet designs and the rigidity of our perceptions. Ahmed’s creative skills not only rest in craft but span varied mediums such as installation, video, and embroidery, all of which can be seen in his solo exhibition at PCA&D. Through these differing mediums he expands his exploration to themes such as social rites of passage, human equitability and commercialization of art. “I love being a hostage [to tradition]”, Ahmed shares, “because it’s a quiz and you have to take it to set yourself free. I think we are never completely free anyway, but you should exactly know where your own cage ends.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Faig Ahmed (Baku, 1982) lives and works in Baku, Azerbaijan and graduated from the sculpture department of Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Art in 2004. He represented Azerbaijan at the nation’s inaugural pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and participated in the show “Love Me, Love Me Not” in 2013. Ahmed has exhibited his works worldwide including group and solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Rome, Dubai, Moscow and the UAE. In 2013, the artist was nominated for the Jameel Prize 3 at Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His works are in public collections including Los Angeles County Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum, and Seattle Art Museum, and in private collections such as West Collection, Philadelphia, Microsoft Art Collection, the collection of Beth Rudin DeWoody, New York; Galila’ Collection, Brussels; Ranza collection, Rome; Jameel Foundation, London and H.H. In Chestertown, MD artists participated in a day long residency with Washington College scientists to explore the environmental issues of the Chesapeake Bay. Their findings were the inspiration behind their artworks for the exhibition. This location poetically ends the Nature in the Dark U.S. series by completing the exhibition where it first began. Showcasing animal life from Victoria, Australia, Nature in the Dark (NITD) invites international artists to create video works inspired by ecological habitat surveys from the state’s national parks. Video and photographs originally used by scientists to identify animals and measure population sizes are creatively repurposed into intriguing video art. The resulting collaborative works offer new perspectives of the environments around us. NITD has produced two editions exhibited in Melbourne, Australia, and Baltimore, Maryland, respectively. The survey photographs used in the first NITD series originate from studies on the long term effects of the absence or presence of fire on wildlife in Bunyip State Park and Wombat State Forest in Victoria. Information is collected by employing motion-triggered cameras through the Victorian National Park Association’s (VNPA) CaughtOnCamera program. Data for the NITD marine series is sourced from VNPA’s Reef Watch project which explores underwater environments along the Victorian coastline. The study of science and art narrated via cutting edge technology exemplifies our desire to know more about ourselves and our world. The Quantified Self: The Data Doesn’t Lie features the thought-provoking artwork of two internationally renowned artists, Laurie Frick and Katie Lewis. In this exhibition Frick and Lewis use data points derived from human actions as the foundation and inspiration for their work. The title hints at the duality of what is usually quantified, such as fluctuations in stress hormones or daily walking routines, while recognizing the existence of the nuanced, mysterious “self” which is largely unquantifiable. Yet it is through the creative process we get an analytical glimpse of not only the individual as told through data points but the multitude of systems that surround us. Michelangelo said, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” So too do Lewis and Frick reveal our individual and collective portraits and patterns hidden in big data. Lewis’ work is a poetic gesture open to interpretation. Lewis compiles data such as physical sensations in the body or the number of steps taken each day. She then creates forms of data visualization using materials such as paper, thread, sewing pins, or graphite. The labor intensive aspect of her artistic method reflects the meticulous data collecting process, consisting of physical repetitions within her self-imposed constraints. The controlled set of repeated actions eventually leads her system to reach a breaking point - paper tears or is eaten away, walls starts to crumble, and thread becomes an impenetrable net. Frick translates personal data points into an expressive, yet orderly representations of an individual, utilizing the form of the grid to create a visual map. Patterns of behavior become patterned artworks and the mass of data serves to potentially predict an individual’s life while simultaneously providing a unique glimpse into one’s hidden personality. The viewer is ultimately offered a glimpse into the future of data...and of themselves.
